Bulla ki jaana mey kaun

Bulla! to me, I am not known


Na mey momin vich maseeta’an

Na mey vich kufar diyan reeta’an

Na mey paaka’an vich paleeta’an


Not a believer inside the mosque, am I

Nor a pagan disciple of false rites

Not the pure amongst the impure



Na mey andar ved kitaaba’an

Na mey rehnda’an bhang sharaaba’an

Na mey rehnda’an mast kharaaba’an


Not in the holy Vedas, am I

Nor in opium, neither in wine

Not in the drunkard’s intoxicated craze



Na mey shaadi na gham-naaki

Na mey vich paleeti paaki

Na mey aabi na mey khaki

Na mey aatish na mey paun

In happiness nor in sorrow, am I

Neither clean, nor a filthy mire

Not from water, nor from earth

Neither fire, nor from air, is my birth

Bulla! to me, I am not known


Na mey arabi na lahori

Na mey hindi shehar nagauri

Na hindu na turak peshawri


Not an Arab, nor Lahori

Neither from Hindi city Nagauri

Neither Hindu/Turk, nor Peshawari


Na mey pehd mazhab da paaya

Ne mey aadam havva jaaya

Na koi apna naam dharaaya

Secrets of religion, I have not known

From Adam and Eve, I am not born

I am not the name I assume



Bulla ki jaana mey kaun

Bulla! to me, I am not known


Avval aakhir aap nu jaana

Na koi dooja hor pehchaana

Metho’n na koi hor siyaana

Bulla Shah! khaada hai kaun

I am the first, I am the last

None other, have I ever known

I am the wisest of them all

Bulleh! do I stand alone?

Na mey moosa na firown
Na mey jaagan na vich saun
Na mey aatish na mey paun
Na mey rehnda vich nadaun
Na mey baithan na vich bhaun

Neither Moses, nor the Pharoh
Neither awake, nor in a sleeping daze
Neither fire, nor from air, is my birth
Nor do I live in Nadaun
Not in stillness, nor on the move
